The Problem
Despite numerous deaths at Beverly Depot, and numerous serious injuries and deaths incurred at other stations, the City of Beverly and the MBTA fail to take action. Instead of addressing the problem, there is a proposal to add 70 new apartment buildings to the MBTA property above and around the garage to further burden the capacity and use of the Depot station.
On October 22, 2019, Moses Shumow – Emerson College professor and husband and father of three - was struck and killed by a MBTA commuter rail train at the Beverly Depot station. His death has left a great void in the lives of his family and friends, and has made it apparent that our passenger rail system is sorely lacking the most basic safety measures.
In Beverly, our train stations are not equipped with basic safety measures like gates, lights, signage, or sound warnings for oncoming trains. These safety measures save lives and prevent the devastation that follows these kinds of accidents. Most, if not all, pedestrian accidents are preventable by basic planning and safety measures.
